KIDS AT RISK say farewell USA

August 10th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

Radio City

Jim Morrisson sang about it. The Black Eyed Peas named their 5th album after it. And someone enlightened in the muddled ways of the world once said that all good things must eventually come to it.
Yes, today is a sad day, for this is ‘THE END’ !

Without appearing too melodramatic it does almost feel like I’m writing an eulogy. Self indulgent I know.
As fast as the whirlwind began, it ended, sweeping us east to west and back again. I’d only just got over the jetlag before it was time to pick up some more.
Sep and Kai left yesterday, Sep heading back to Aus, Kai to England, while Mon and Riss fly out to Europe this afternoon, leaving me to begin my long lonely schlepp back to Australia tonight.

Unfortunately Sep found the arsenal of open condoms I had artfully placed in his luggage (I’d been stockpiling them from venues for days for this sole purpose) and placed anything of mine that wasn’t locked down in their own individually wrapped lubricated rubber container. Keys, sunglasses, passport, toothbrush etc.. Adolescent childishness? Yes. Also amusing? Yes.
I’m still happy in the knowlege that two nights ago he enthusiastically slurped an icy margarita to the bottom of the glass before he realised there was a rubbery treat awaiting him at the end.
I’m also happy to report that the tequila-fight-induced scab on Sep’s head has vanished without leaving a scar. Probably due to the hot weather. (I’m just praying that I don’t find that in my luggage too when I get home).

The tight timeframe definitely made New York the recipient of some heavy duty cramming. Following the car prison that was LA, we more than made up for the previous lack of leg work by walking almost every single street in Manhattan.
Tribecca, Lower East, Upper East, Williamsburgh, Soho, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Central Park – you name it, we were there at some point. I was the one attempting to calf stretch my shin splints out every ten steps.

This is the only real problem with anything resembling a tour. When you’re only in a city for a week you try to make a concerted effort to be up and out at the crack of dawn and return as late as possible, in a desperate attempt to inhale as much local culture possible. My only real regret is not catching the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the MET. The lines were hours long, so fingers crossed it comes to Aus.

Our final gig in New York was with fellow expats The Cassette Kids, at Pianos in the Lower East side. You can almost see the world famous Katz deli from the stage. I confess I dashed out to slip in a cheeky Reuben sandwich between soundcheck and performance. I’m sure its meaty pastrami goodness was what buoyed me into my giddy musical high that night. It was unanimous – Pianos was our favourite of all the US gigs. Great room. Great crowd. Great sound. And without seeming too narcissistic, our best performance. It’s true what they say. The more you practise the better you get. Who’d have thought it?!
There’s a strong chance I may have even headbanged on stage (I’m presuming this, as my neck hurts like hell today) but I’ll have to see the video footage to know for sure. Here are a couple of photos from our Pianos gig, thanks to photographer Adela Loconte.

A quick sum up of the trip in 500 words or less, though I obviously can’t speak for everyone.

Favourite celeb moment?
Hermoine from Harry Potter at The Viper Room. Hilary Swank came close second but she just lacked the indefinable magic that Hermoine has (yes bad pun). I admit I was a little excited about seeing the girl from Falling Skies in Amoeba Music as well but I know that’s just sad.

Favourite gig?
Pianos.

Favourite city?
New York, without a doubt.

Favourite superhero costume? Dunno but I’m sure it involved latex. I do think the superhero boxers I bought especially for comic-con were impressive, although I’m alone on that count. I tried to casually wear them around the house a few times but nobody would even make eye contact. Rejected!

Favourite meal?
A tough one. So many goodies. A tie between The Everleigh and Greenblatts diner in LA.

Favourite flight?
Los Angeles to New York on American Airlines. Now that was an experience.
Electronic devices off. Tray tables in the upright position. And in the case of our 7 foot tall frontman, Septimus, strap ankles firmly around neck. He resembles a sardine at the best of times on airplanes. That time it was like squeezing a whale into an anchovy tin.

Favourite argument?
Also a tough one. It probably involved someone taking too long to get ready or being just plain late (no names but you know who you are).

Favourite album of the trip?
Cults – self titled debut (60s influenced indie pop from Manhattan – get it if you haven’t already)

Favourite comment? The one that someone blogged about Larissa needing to take her helmet off. She got an immediate trim within hours of hitting New York after that one.

Favourite bar?
Palihouse in West Hollywood.

Favourite Manager?
MONIQUE ROTHSTEIN !!!!!

Anyway, time to go. The girls and I have already decided we’re having Mexican as our last meal. Some may argue jalapenos before a long flight are a bad idea (ie fellow passengers) but I beg to differ. Wish us luck.
Once again, thanks for everything America, you’ve been awesome!! We’ll see you soon.
Of course the biggest thanks goes to Art Council of NSW for making the whole trip possible. WE LOVE YOU!
Bye! xx

KIDS AT RISK hit New York

August 8th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

New York is HOT! Really really hot!

We’ve arrived in the middle of a heatwave, admittedly not a surprise thanks to the past week’s hourly updates from our ever dependable weathervane Larissa Rate. (Seriously, the girl can instinctively guess the correct air temperature to within a degree).
Brooklyn has welcomed us with thick sticky arms and hugged the cool LA evening air right out. Taking the subway is like riding a rollercoaster through an oven, particularly when venturing to the deep dark depths of the JZ line. Down there the air seems centuries old. Heavy and inert. It’s like walking on the moon.

We’re staying on the top floor of a beautiful three storey brownstone house in the predominantly African-American neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, an area that is apparently undergoing a gentrification as Manhattan money spills in over the Williamsburgh bridge.
Arriving at midnight I’ll admit we were all a little apprehensive about the area those first 12 hours, particularly our little countryboy drummer Kai who nervously wound his windows up the closer we got to home. Saying that if I had the winning combination of a red head, bleached white skin and prepubescent facial hair I’d feel like a dart board for trouble too no matter where I was.
I suspect a combination of too many gangster films and overactive imaginations lead to those silly initial prejudices as a day later they’d been cast aside and we’d already found ourselves loving the area. Sure, not the relaxing holiday destination one would demand of a honeymoon but, being an easy 10 minute train ride into Manhattan (five to Williamsburgh) it fit our needs perfectly.  Plus having only known we were going a week before we left I think travel agent/weatherman extraordinaire Larissa did a good job in the time she had (now if only she’d stop whinging about the heat…)

Suffering from a large case of cabin fever (our honeymoon being long since over) the first few days have been spent by all deliberately reacquainting oneself with oneself. We’ve been catching the subway into Manhattan and then immediately splitting up to do whatever respective tasks we’ve individually prioritised, like shopping (amazing), sightseeing (amazing) or eating (amazing).  The air may be congested and smog-filled, but this rediscovered scent of freedom couldn’t be fresher if I were skipping naked through the English countryside. Now there’s a horrid thought.

Our first gig in New York was at Public Assembly in Williamsburgh (a bit like Surry Hills on steroids. More people. More restaurants. More bars. More everything). If I could pick a suburb to live in New York it would be here. The gig went splendidly and we also found a great new pal in the band before us, ‘Dialogue from a silent film’, Dan Kasshu. Not only blessed with being a nice guy he also had EASILY the coolest accent (Brooklyn) I’ve ever heard. If I had my way I’d adopt him. We all would but they’d only get him on weekends.
Several hours, a NY slice (or two) and a Bud later, and we were home in bed. One gig to go.
Here are some people looking at art in MOMA.
Ciao

KIDS AT RISK bid adieu to Los Angeles

August 1st, 2011 | Lee Devaney

keyboard

Finally with much sadness we must depart Los Angeles. What a cool city !
Sure the downside may be that you have to drive everywhere but on the up at least you know whatever the destination you’ll be greeted by ultra nice people. Thats our experience anyway.
Its reputation for being a click town, where people come to ‘make it’ seems to have sunk into the social psyche of the town and metamorphosed into a vibe where everyone seems genuinely open and enthusiastic to chat. The only slight disappointment really was In/Out burger but it possibly can’t be blamed. By the time I ate it the lower part of my body was starting to look a bit like a meat pattie.

The Bar Lubitsch and Viper Room gigs went really well.
Played Paper Rock Scissors with Carole Kings engineer in the toilet of Bar Lubitsch to see who could wash their hands first – such politeness (he won). The loser (me) not only had to wash their hands second but also buy shots of tequila for the other. Tequila shots that later resulted in a Sep and Lee wrestle on the way home, Sep ending up with a bloody forehead and grazed arms. I was left sporting a Klingon style graze and lump the size of a plum on my head. Good times.
The Viper Room stage was easily the best sounding stage we’ve played on in our short history. Slightly surreal given the venues history (he’ll never be an old man river…) Not only was Hermione from Harry Potter there but the guy who played drums in the band after us was none other than Red Mist from the movie KICK ASS. Good drummer. Porno band…
We’ll put the ‘The Viper Room Sessions’ up soon.

Anyway time to move on again. We leave for Brooklyn today which we’re excited about. We have all started to get slightly car claustrophobic of one another so I’m sure the first couple of days will involve much solo wandering. Theres nothing quite like the personal space you get in a city of 18 million people…

KIDS AT RISK vs. our first US release

Get your hands on it here !

KIDS AT RISK vs. Comic Con 2011

July 26th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

Comic-Con. What a trip! Its like the Olympics for nerds.
Imagine a world where everyone wears bright, tight coloured spandex or skin paint, and the only real superpower is the ability to recall word for word every line ever written from any sci-fi fantasy show or movie ever created, then you’d be close to being there. Sure there are your big names. Your Spidermans, Supermans, Wonderwomans, Xmen, Captain Americas.. you name it. 100s of them actually. The most impressive though are the random characters that appeared once in a xmas special or an axed ep of Deep Space Spine never to be seen again. These are true believers.

Wandered stunned through the convention until we had to dash over to an online interview blog style thing with YOWIE which was great fun then back over to the theatre to perform a few songs prior to the screening of Griff The Invisible. Great vibe and everyone so lovely, welcoming and supportive. San Diego is a very cool city.

Finally got home after the 2 and a half hour saddle-like coach ride at 2am. Its been a very long and exciting day. Here’s a little taster of our experience of Comic Con.
(Sweetpea has thus far remained suspiciously absent. We’re worried.)

KIDS AT RISK vs. Los Angeles

July 25th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

12,000 kms, 16hours, 1 delay, many drinks later WE’VE ARRIVED IN LA !!! The temperature a balmy 27 degrees, none of us can quite believe we’re in California particularly after the whirlwind surrealism involved in the last minute preparation of this trip. Once we’d escaped customs we hightailed it to our hired monster truck, hauled our instruments into the back and GPS’d across LA traffic to our temporary home away from home, 7214 Sycamore Trail, which is nestled comfortably up in the Hollywood Hills just off Mullholland Drive.

We have a great view of the whole area up here including glimpses of the Hollywood sign (smaller than I imagined. not as disappointing as The Big Banana but definitely a bit puny). Maybe not everything’s bigger in America. Speaking of bigger. Heres our beast (and Kai).

So far no arguments yet (Sep did hint at violence once while pondering aloud whether or not Riss could still sing with a broken nose. He said it with a smile though). Mind you there is the early indication of a thief in our midst. Perhaps it was the initial excitement of the ridiculously low cost compared to our own. Perhaps it was just mistaken identity. Either way one of Kai’s bananas has gone missing. While no ones come forward yet we’ve all silently acknowledged to keep an eye on the situation. (I’d bet my money its Sep).

We popped into the famous Rainbow Bar, once the epicenter of LA’s glamrock scene for a late night snack/drink. No sign of Lemmy or Dave Grohl (regulars) but lots of look alikes of an era long gone. Bad and cool all at the same time.

Excitement is slowly building for what will surely be the madness of ComicCon. San Diego beakons !
(No sign so far of our apparent housemate, Sweetpea the cat. Hope we havent scared him off.)

KIDS AT RISK vs. USA ! USA USA!

July 8th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

So its been a while between sleeps but in that time we’ve had the awesome news we’ve been selected by the Art Council of NSW to be the proud recipients of a 20K grant to travel to America. Rather excited to say the least. With 12 days to go all we need now is our Visas to be approved… still, check out our poster in the meantime!

KIDS AT RISK vs Channel [V]

April 12th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

V is Victory ! AND Channel [V]. If like me you were an early riser on Sunday morning, eager to sip in as many glorious sabbath seconds as possible (or in fact actually like me and still awake from the night before) you may have caught our television debut as ‘Doing the best that we can’ beamed out at 7am on Channel [V]. Since then its done the rounds a number of times. In fact imagine my surprise when again early the next day, while engaged in my routine Monday morning coffee ritual I glanced over and saw Larissas enormous face (it was a big screen…) eyeballing me down. Fear replaced confusion which was replaced by anger then replaced by recognition, finally settling on excitement as I realised that she wasn’t in fact stalking me again but instead was doing the best that she can acting out her brilliant part in our video clip!
If you want to play a part in spreading the word and blaring us out there as much as possible you can Request us on the following link at the Channel [V]website. Help us help you. Go on.

KIDS AT RISK vs. Rolling Stone

April 6th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

I admit it I’ve always been a fan of Wednesdays. Even on the worst of weeks when the alarm clock bleeps its trancey crack-of-dawn arrival I’ll still drop myself a mini-grin once it occurs to me that ‘ah its Wednesday!’. Today the grin is extra big. Think cheshire cat style ear to ear. Why?
Check out Page 31 in the May issue of ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE to see why. This month they’ve dedicated a little real estate to KIDS and have listed us as one of their ’11 artists to watch in 2011′! Here she blows…

If you live in that part of the world tune-in to to hear him discuss all things KIDS AT RISK and GRIFF THE INVISIBLE related movie stuff. Go Sep GO !

KIDS AT RISK vs. more reviews

March 30th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

More film review positivity via cultural curators Pages Digital and movie buffs Anomalous Material. Some proud excerpts…

“For the musical score, actor turned writer/director Leon Ford took a chance and hired Australian band Kids at Risk to create a completely new body of work to accompany the whole film. The band, who only recently appeared on the national music scene last year when they were Unearthed by Triple J, excelled in creating an emotive yet appropriate score to the film. As well as tracks incorporating their usual indie/punk style, the band also successfully dabbled in romantic ballad and instrumental theme; one entitled “Sneaky Theme” embodies the topsy-turvy quirk of the Pink Panther theme tune, as Griff tiptoes around the town…”
www.pagesdigital.com/review-griff-invisible

“The soundtrack, featuring predominantly songs from local Sydney band, Kids at Risk, accompanies the action perfectly in every scene. The songs were so enjoyable, that I often found them to overwhelm the visuals at times…”

KIDS AT RISK vs. Septimus Hollow

March 27th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

We spent this wet Sunday rehearsing deep down in the dank depths of the dusty Bondi Beach abode that is known as ‘Septimus Hollow’.
The great thing about timelapse videos is that no sound is recorded which essentially means you can hear neither the bum notes nor the arguments. This is never a bad thing… 2 hours in 20 seconds.

KIDS AT RISK vs. The Sun-Herald

March 27th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

Another great review for Griff the Invisible, receiving a brilliant 8 out of 10 rating. We even get our individual names mentioned which is pretty cool (not that we do it for that reason :-) .
Ahhh the acknowledgment ! The adulation ! Oh the glamour !
Now if only I could afford to pay rent…

KIDS AT RISK vs. Video clip

March 27th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

OK so the nervous wait is over. The will we or won’t we look ridiculous thoughts that have permeated our brains for the past fortnight have finally come to an end with a resounding yes we do and no we don’t all at the same time. This is to be expected when you make a fun clip though. With the video now in our hot little hands it should be hitting the world later in the week. Stay tuned …. HOORAH !!!

KIDS AT RISK vs. Concrete Playground

March 24th, 2011 | Lee Devaney

A great review of ‘Griff the Invisible’ courtesy of the fine folks over at Concrete Playground (www.concreteplayground.com.au).  We particularly like this part…

“Another stand out are Sydney band Kids at Risk <http://kidsatriskband.com/>, who have leapt from Triple J Unearthed discovery to pen the film’s soundtrack. Though Ford also makes bold use of silence, the indie-rock trio hit it out of the park, crafting such a striking soundtrack, you’ll want to head straight from the cinema to buy the album (though, for now you’ll have to make do with downloading the single <http://itunes.apple.com/au/album/doing-the-best-that-we-can/id420308432?i=420308436> Doing the Best that We Can).”

Keep ‘em coming !
